Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy
The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy was established in 2011 as Federal Ministry of Communication Technology to stimulate a knowledge-based economy and information society in the country. The Ministry was created to supervise and facilitate ICT as a key tool to promote job creation, economic growth and transparency of governance in Nigeria.
Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami FNCS, FBCS, FIIM is the current Minister of the Ministry. The goal of the Minister is to create and develop policies that will propel the Nigerian economy to a digitalised economy. The Ministry of Communications is renamed based on the recommendation of the current Minister to help in expanding the scope of its goals and promote the digitalization of the Nigerian economy. This expansion is a key point in the Federal Government’s Economic Growth and Recovery Plan (EGRP). The EGRP is a medium-term plan to revive the Nigerian economy from recession, with three main objectives; Firstly, it aims to restore growth by achieving macroeconomic stability. Secondly, it aims to invest in the Nigerian people. Finally, the plan aims to build a globally competitive economy by promoting digital-led industry growth and many other avenues. The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy aims to increase the contribution of the ICT industry to the nation’s GDP and other sectors of the economy.
National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)
National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) an Agency under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy was established under the NITDA 2007 Act with the responsibility of developing and regulating the Information Technology (IT) sector of Nigeria. The role of NITDA therefore, is to develop, regulate and advise on IT in the country through regulatory standards, guidelines and policies. Additionally, NITDA is the clearing house for all IT projects and infrastructural development in the country. It is the prime Agency for e-government implementation, Internet governance and general IT development in Nigeria.
Innovation and entrepreneurship are considered key factors of growth and survival of modern economies. Thus, NITDA has made the commitment to nurture, cultivate and expand the Nigerian ICT innovation and entrepreneurship space by establishing the Office for ICT Innovation and Entrepreneurship (OIIE).
The establishment of OIIE as a specialized and focused vehicle is aimed to address the challenges that are inhibiting the growth of entrepreneurs, as well as create enabling environments to foster innovation and entrepreneurship across the country. The policies, initiatives and programs of OIIE will promote employment opportunities, impact socio economic objectives and ultimately there will be increased contribution of other sectors of ICT to national GDP.
Nigerian Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Portal (NTIEP).
This portal, the Nigerian Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Portal (NTIEP) is an online platform designed to showcase the Nigerian technology ecosystem, grow an exchange community of start-ups, hubs, investors, academia and to provide access to both government and private sector initiatives and other opportunities.
NTIEP is a platform that brings together key stakeholders of the Nigerian Tech Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem to foster the growth of the community. It is the single largest online platform for start-ups and entrepreneurs in Nigeria, connecting them to other start-ups, as well as other key stakeholders such as investors, mentors and incubators.
The Portal aims to reduce knowledge asymmetry in the start-up ecosystem and better equip entrepreneurs with essential information and valuable resources.
